1.What outcomes had you envisioned for this course? Did you achieve those outcomes? Did the actual course outcomes align with those that you envisioned?
At the start of the course before I read any course material, I envisioned that I would have a better understanding on how multimedia affects learning and how it can be used.I know that I enjoy multimedia components to my distance learning educational experience. At the end of the course, I expected that I would know how to edit multimedia videos.
I achieved and exceeded my own personal goals.I know how to edit video along with proper procedures for capturing video. From reading the course materials I learned not to use the zoom feature excessively, something that I was guilty of before taking this course.I also learned that sound is very important when reading week 4 assigned readings which were all about sound and sound editing. I learned that today’s student thrives on multimedia as a delivery system for information.
I think the course outcomes aligned with the outcomes I envisioned. I can now think of many practical ways to use multimedia to assist in student learning and involvement.
2.To the extent that you achieved the outcomes, are they still relevant to the work that you do in your school? Why or why not?
I have learned to plan a multimedia project by creating scripts, storyboards, how to shot video, edit video and sound files to produce a multimedia project.
I work at the technology help desk for my school district; I will be able to use my new skills at my office.I can help teachers who need help how to start, plan or implement a multimedia project. At my next department meeting I am going to suggest that we create a series of training videos for our staff so that we can send them links to the training video as they need them.
I think that the skills that I have learned are relevant not only what I do in my job but outside of my job as well. The skills that I now have allow me to communicate better with others and share with others like my vacation video that I just created and posted on youtube, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKStxKVEdKs Many of the teachers and administrative staff use youtube video either in whole or in part without citing the material.I would remind them that they are leaders and models for their students and they need to show their students how to properly cite material. They need to make sure that they follow the government’s guidelines for fair use of copy written material; they can use material copy written material without written consent as long as they are as long as they are using it for a critique, commentary, “…news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research” project (http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html). 3.What outcomes did you not achieve? What prevented you from achieving them?
I think I achieved all outcomes of this course, I feel very confident in my new skills.
I didn’t have any problems achieving the outcomes since I found all of the software easy to work with as I tried different types of software for editing and put in the time to learn them. For week two we were told not to use the same program that we used for week one, this helped me become more adaptive and confident with trying different software for editing.
The one major problem for me and my group was that there was no University of Lamar server space for us to save our work on, making it very hard to share video clips. We ran into multiple problems and we were able to get what we needed done.It was very discouraging because we thought we had come up with a solution to sharing data, only to run into limitations with data limits, this added to our frustration as a group. We used www.drivehq.com to share our data.We used a free account which was very limiting.
4.Were you successful in completing the course assignments? If not, what prevented or discouraged you?
Yes, I was successful in completing the course assignments.
The first assignment was the most fun for me, as I learned to make video using still photos with a voice over narration. The major challenge for me was to do something I have never done before and get out of my comfort zone.I was very nervous about this assignment at first and it took me many hours to get familiar with imovie, which is what I used to make my first assignment.
The second assignment was editing video footage; this was also a first for me. I had never edited any video footage.I used Microsoft Movie Maker for this assignment. That assignment gave me the experience and the confidence to edit video.
The first two assignments were needed because it gave me the foundation that I needed to complete the group assignment.
As a group the only problem we had was the sharing of multimedia files; however this did not stop us from collaborating and sharing the material needed to complete the project.
5.What did you learn from this course: about yourself, your technology and leadership skills, and your attitudes?
I learned that I am good at editing multimedia files and putting them together to create a story.I had never tried it before and I really enjoyed creating multimedia videos.
I completed my bachelor’s degree online at Penn State and had several group assignments during my degree program.I always seem to emerge as the group leader, so I was not surprised that I ended up being the group leader for this project.I have in the past had the attitude that I was going to get a saddled with most of the group work, and that it didn’t matter to me because I wanted to get the assignment done right. This time, I was very fortunate to get involved with a group of people who take their course work as serious as I do.We worked very well together and everyone participated and did their part.I suspect that my team members are used to collaborating effective as part of their work experience. It was a great experience for me and I enjoyed it.
